postheadericon Extreme Road Bicycle Racing – Race Across America

Everyone has heard of the Tour de France, one of the world’s premier extreme road races (approximately 2,000 miles over the courseof 21 days). Although the riders are only in the saddle for 4-6 hours per day, the speeds they carry are incomprehensible to most cyclists – nearly 30 mph on flats (consistently); nearly 15 mph on very steep climbs; sometimes 60+ mph on Alpine descents; and an unbelievable 40-45 mph in the sprints!

There are other races, though – in particular, the Race Across America, which is arguably the most difficult road race in the world. Racers ride from the west coast to the east coast of the USA, following a prescribed, closely monitored route. Racers can do the race as solo competitors, as a two-person, a four-person or an eight-person team. The 8-person teams are generally “fun” teams, and usually ride for the benefit of a charity.

The solo racers cross the continent in 10-12 days of long, long days in the saddle (20-22 hours per day). Duo teams takes approximately 7-9 days to finish. In duo, the racers alternate riding and resting; each rider is in the saddle 12 hours every day. The four-person is by far the fastest, crossing the country in about 5 days. This category is all about speed. Each rider takes short turns of approximately one hour (with a 3-hour rest); and their shift is ridden time-trial style which is much, much faster than the endurance pace held by the solo or duo riders.

postheadericon The Race Car Inspired BMW M3

German premier automotive maker BMW continues to maintain its hold as the top selling luxury auto brand in the world. Battling with archrival Mercedes-Benz year in and year out for the highest laurels, BMW continues to constantly tweak its existing line and add new vehicles to its line in a bid to stimulate and strengthen customer interest. One area where BMW has found much of its recent success is with its race car inspired line of vehicles, the M Series. Since 1979 various Motorsports [M} tags have been affixed to vehicles that have been developed by the BMW Motorsports division, including the BMW M3 a car based on BMW’s popular 3 Series. Today, BMW engineers are hard at work on developing an all new BMW M3 and, if all of the auto buzz is correct, very few cars will be able to keep up with this 400 hp road commander. Please keep reading for a closer look at the all new, soon to be released, BMW M3.

A pitched battle in autodom continues to gather force pitting German automaker against German automaker. Legendary Mercedes-Benz is taking on heralded BMW for the right to call themselves the top selling luxury brand in the world. For years, the honor belonged exclusively to Mercedes-Benz, but a recent stumble on Mercedes’ part coupled with a surge of new products from BMW has placed BMW in first place. Not far behind the two is Lexus, the luxury division of Toyota, but for now the battle remains a fight between these two German automakers.

For luxury car enthusiasts, the BMW-Mercedes rivalry has been a win-win battle as both automakers have been pouring engineering funds into their vehicles. Neither automaker is resting on their past achievements; instead both are pressing forward to add the latest safety features including Mercedes’ Night Vision Assist and BMW’s impact absorbing bumpers which absorb stronger impacts without damaging the vehicle’s main body. Safety is one of the chief concerns for consumers when selecting a particular luxury brand according to all of the leading automotive industry surveys.

For BMW, its latest automotive project has been a closely guarded secret until very recently. Camouflaged spy shots of the all new BMW M3 have been circulating on the internet for some time now but only since June has a pre-production version of a fully unclothed BMW M3 been spotted. It was seen navigating the twisting roads of Southern California according to The Car Connection, the vehicle information and shopping site.

For BMW enthusiasts, news of a BMW M3 pre-production sighting means one thing: BMW will soon announce the date in 2007 when its latest M Series car will be available in dealer showrooms.

Right now, the current BMW M3 is still based on the fourth generation 3 Series which was replaced in 2006. The new BMW M3 will be based on the latest generation body frame and feature some notable improvements over the previous BMW M3 model including:

A larger, more potent V8 engine with an output of 400 horses. Currently, the BMW M3 features an inline six engine with a 333 horsepower output. The new model is expected to rocket from start to 60 in under 5 seconds, topping out at 155 mph.

A six or possibly seven speed manual transmission.

A longer wheelbase for better weight distribution.

Styling cues from the BMW M3 will find its way to the new model from front wing vents to twin exit exhausts along with the ubiquitous M series recognized emblems.

postheadericon Why Race Bikes are Better than Harley Davidson

Many people love their Harley Davidson even when they are stuck on the side of the road all day, waiting for someone to help them fix it or wait for a two truck to lift it up onto a flat bed. Every year on the way to Sturgis hundreds of people never make it on their Harley Davidson because the bike breaks down in the middle of nowhere and they are stuck with the wind howling and sitting on their butts. You can see them for hundreds and hundreds of miles each year coming from every direction stuck on the side of the road.

Why are race bikes better than Harley Davidson? Well they use less gasoline for one reason. They go faster too and accelerate twice as fast. The Japanese race bikes are also more trouble free and do not break down as must. Japanese race bikes cost less money to by. Is that all? No, that is not all I am just getting warmed up which takes Harley Davidson a few minutes longer than Japanese Race Bikes.

Japanese race bikes are safer to control and more stable, more maneuverable and lighter weight. Japanese bikes can stop faster and thus prevent accidents too. Just about everything a Harley Davidson can do a Japanese Race Bike can do better, more efficiently and cheaper too. So, why do people buy Harley Davidson Motorcycles? Well it is part of the branding image and the Harley Davidson riders just think they look cool acting like sneaky bad guys. Silly group of folks who have never grown up; that is why I like Harley Davidson; I refuse to grow up.

postheadericon Famous Bike Riders

Motorcycles are gaining popularity in the American culture and they are now being seen on TV. Though motorcycles have been around for a while there has been a certain stigma related to them. People usually thought that they only people that rode them were “bad boys”, but now you can catch people riding them every day. One reason for their popularity is the economic value that they offer customers. This article will look at a few TV shows that showcase motorcycles. Whether they are from years ago or are reality shows, these shows all showcase not only the motorcycle itself but also the culture that surrounds them.

One classic show that was a pioneer in showing a motorcycle is Happy Days. The show aired for over a decade finally ending in 1984. This show was not about the 70s or 80s though. It captured American life during the 50s and 60s. The show was based in Wisconsin and followed the Cunningham family. Happy Days portrayed them as your typical all America family. They take in a former high school dropout, biker Arthur Fonzie. More recognizable as “The Fonz”, Fonzie was your typical ladies man. Though the show originally focused on Richie Cunningham and his friends, Fonzie was a favorite of audiences and became a central character as the others changes story lines.

In today’s TV era we get a more raw depiction of bike riders and their culture on the drama series Sons of Anarchy. The show is about the relationships between everyone involved in the outlaw motorcycle club. The show takes place in California and follows Jackson “Jax” Teller as he handles his duties of being Vice President but also we see what happens when he begins to question the club and himself. We can see the relationship struggles with the characters but also with the motorcycle club and their rivals.

A lot of shows on Tv are now reality series. So why not make one about the life of motorcycle riders. On the discovery channel or TLC you can catch American Choppers. This reality series follows Paul Teutal, Sr. and Paul Teutal Jr. as they manufacture custom motorcycles. The show focuses on the disagreements between the father/son duo and shows how they often butt heads on their designs. The show then became American Choppers: Senior v. Junior. Paul Teutal Jr. has left the show twice now and is in a legal battle with his father over buying out his shares of Orange County Choppers. He currently owns 20% and him and his father cannot agree on the buyout price so it remains an ongoing battle. The show has since inspired two different video games as well as a fantasy bike contest. During the contest four winners won O CC bikes.

All of these shows portray motorcycle life and culture in a different way. We now know that there is no way to truly categorize this group of individuals because they are all so different. Just like our society the motorcycle world consists of people from all walks of life.
